Kazakhstan Plant Project

The Power Station Modernization and Expansion project in Kazakhstan is a transformative initiative designed to upgrade 35 thermal and natural gas power plants, ensuring energy reliability while advancing the transition to clean and sustainable energy. With a total investment of $25 billion, the project is led by a strategic consortium comprising GAS/MFI and Amite Group, in collaboration with Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy and Samruk-Kazyna JSC. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for this groundbreaking project was signed in November 2024, marking a significant milestone in the partnership.

This project will modernize existing infrastructure, improve efficiency, and introduce renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydrogen, addressing the growing energy demands of the country. The overarching objectives are to increase power generation capacity, enhance the reliability of power stations, and drive the country’s shift toward sustainable energy production.

The modernization will significantly contribute to strengthening Kazakhstan’s energy security by reducing its reliance on outdated power systems and increasing self-sufficiency in meeting both current and future demands. It is also expected to attract foreign investment, supporting the country’s economic development and fostering industrial and commercial growth by providing reliable, clean energy. The project is structured in phases, with the initial focus on planning and feasibility studies from 2024-2026, followed by the modernization and expansion of priority plants, such as Ekibastuz Power Station No. 3, between 2027 and 2029. From 2030 onwards, renewable energy integration will take center stage, scaling up solar, wind, and hydrogen energy solutions while enhancing grid stability through energy storage systems.

Sustainability is at the heart of this initiative, with a clear commitment to reducing carbon emissions in line with global climate goals. With the expected investment recovery within three years, the project positions Kazakhstan as a regional leader in energy modernization, bringing long-term benefits to both the local community and the broader economy. This project stands as a unique opportunity to address critical energy challenges while fostering economic growth and environmental sustainability in Central Asia.
